Latino Public Broadcasting would like to announce the selection of the LPB funded documentary EL VELADOR for the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. EL VELADOR will hold a special our of competition screening. Congratulations, Natalia!
About the Directors’ Fortnight – Among the various sections at the Cannes Film Festival, the Directors’ Fortnight is distinguished by its independent-mindedness, its non-competitive nature and its concern to cater to non-professional Cannes audiences. Striving to be eclectic and receptive to all forms of cinematic expression, the Directors’ Fortnight pays particular attention to the annual production of fiction features, short films and documentaries, to the emergence of independent fringe filmmaking, and even to contemporary popular genres, provided these films are the expression of an individual talent and an original directorial style. More information about the Directors’ Fortnight can be found HERE.
EL VELADOR
Director: Natalia Almada
Documentary/60 Minutes
From dusk to dawn EL VELADOR accompanies Martin, the guardian angel whom, night after night, watches over the extravagant mausoleums of Mexico’s most notorious Drug Lords. In the labyrinth of the narco-cemetery, this film about violence without violence reminds us how, in the turmoil of Mexico’s bloodiest conflict since the Revolution, ordinary life persists and quietly defies the dead.
