NINA ALVAREZ is an award­-winning documentarian, journalist and video
photographer with over twenty years of experience working all over the world. She is currently the Senior Editor of Investigations at Futuro Media Group, and this year will be joining the full­time faculty at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism as an Assistant Professor of Video Journalism.

From 2015-­2017, Nina was the Senior Producer at The Naked Truth, a series of one­-hour investigative documentaries (Fusion Network), where her work has been recognized by a DuPont Journalism Award and an RFK Human Rights/ Journalism Award. Nina directed Fields of Promise, a short documentary supported by ITVS about a Mexican family who follow the crops from Fresno, California to Portland Oregon. She received a duPont Columbia Journalism Award for this work. She directed and wrote The New Americans, an episode for the 2012 PBS landmark series, Latino Americans, which received a Peabody Award and the Imagen Award. Nina’s producing, writing and directing credits also include: Very Young Girls (Toronto Film Festival / Showtime), The Battle for America’s Schools (MSNBC) Marijuana USA (CNBC), the Oscar nominated, Which Way Home (HBO) and the Emmy ­nominated, Aftershock, Pakistan (MTV).

In 2014, she was selected to participate in the inaugural session of the Women Filmmakers of Color Residency Program at the NALIP Artist Retreat Center in Vermont. Nina is a New York City native and thought she was Puerto Rican until she was in the second grade. She would have been happy if that had been true, but she is in fact the daughter of Salvadorans, who came with not a lot, besides dreams, heart and guts. Finally, Nina has begun work on a lifelong production, raising her daughter Alíx Lucía, who is currently two.
