Karla is a San Diego-based filmmaker, creative content producer, and Expressive Arts Therapist with roots in the US/Mexican border of Tijuana. Awarded with both national and local filmmaking grants to create social change: the Latino Public Broadcasting Digital Media Public Fund, YAB State Farm®, Boys and Girls Foundation, Gould Foundation, and private funding from 2010-2017. Karla focuses her lens on social justice from a contemplative and poetic narrative.

Her directorial debut, Mujer Inmigrante was part of the San Diego Latino Film Festival in 2010. Her PSAs have reached local television through the San Diego County of Education. She is the director and producer of In Tune, a short documentary nominated for competition at the 2019 San Diego Latino Film Festival. For over ten years, she has presented relevant social issues affecting the female Latino community at the border.

Her academic background includes a B.A. Art History, Analysis, and Criticism, and an M.A. in Expressive Arts Therapy with an emphasis on film as therapy. She holds a deep appreciation for film analysis and deep listening. Karla’s documentary shorts and work presents an existential and poetic language through self-dialogue, sound and music. Her storytelling puts the Latin female experiential narrative at the center of truth-telling.
