NEW YORK–Public Television stations throughout the United States will present SOUNDMIX: FIVE YOUNG MUSICIANS in the fall of 2004 (check local listings). The one-hour special tells the stories of five diverse young musicians, ages 11 through 19, whose emerging identities have been uniquely shaped by a range of American musical styles.
SOUNDMIX introduces Camilo Molina Gaetan, a Latino drummer from New York City; Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, a jazz horn player from New Orleans; Hovia Edwards, a Native American flute player from Fort Hall, Idaho;: Gabrielle Athayde, a classical cellist and rock bassist from San Francisco; and Jake Krack, an old time fiddle player from West Virginia. Mentors featured in the program include trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, the late old time fiddle player Melvin Wine and Latin drummers Johnny Almendra and Louis Bauzo.
SOUNDMIX: FIVE YOUNG MUSICIANS tells many different kinds of stories—stories of American cultures, regions, families, and musical styles; stories of mentors passing on traditions; and stories that show how in a multi-cultural society, music is a powerful resource that carries traditions, shapes identity and bridges differences.
Accompanying the SOUNDMIX broadcast is a website with a range of additional information about the young musicians. The website also features lesson plans for elementary and high school music and social studies classes and music education links. Community screenings of the program are slated for New Orleans, New York City, San Francisco, West Virginia, and Idaho.
SOUNDMIX: FIVE YOUNG MUSICIANS is produced by Free Range Productions in New York City: Pamela Benson, Claudia Mogel, and Alan McPheely, producers. Free Range Productions is currently developing a series based on the program.
